Clinical Prospects of Cancer Immunotherapy

This short course will review the development of immunotherapy-based approaches in the treatment of cancer as well as the current and emerging targets for cancer immunotherapies. The efficacy, toxicity and challenges associated with the use of immunotherapeutic agents in oncologic practice will also be discussed along with the role of biomarker development in predicting treatment outcomes.

Instructors Biographies:


Gaurav GoelGaurav Goel, M.D., Assistant Professor, Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology, University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center

Gaurav Goel, MD is a medical oncologist, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Kentucky. After earning his medical degree from the University of Delhi in India, Dr. Goel completed his internship and residency in Internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. He then joined University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute as a clinical and research fellow in medical oncology and hematology. Dr. Goel has authored several scholarly articles including research papers, reviews and book chapters and served as an investigator on multiple clinical research studies. He specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, with a special research focus on immunotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of cancer. One of his recent publications was titled, Advances in the management of gastrointestinal cancers-an upcoming role of immune checkpoint blockade. Journal of Hematology & Oncology. 2015; 8(1): 86. Dr. Goel is also a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society of Hematology (ASH), and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Weijing Sun, MD, FACP, is a medical oncologist, Professor of Medicine, Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Disease Program in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh and Co-Director of the UPMC Gastrointestinal Cancer Center for Excellence. He specializes in the treatment of colorectal cancer. Dr. Sun has authored many publications including original clinical research articles, reviews, and invited editorial comments in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. He has also written chapters as a GI oncology expert for several medical textbooks including WebMD, Textbook of Gastroenterology. Dr. Sun has had more than 90 publications including a recent publication titled Cancer immunotherapy in clinical practice—the past, present, and future. Chin J Cancer. Sep 2014; 33(9): 445–457. He is serving as a member of editorial boards or review committees for several professional journals. Dr. Sun is a member of professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Cancer Research, the Eastern Cooperative Group of Oncology, the American College of Physicians – Internal Medicine, and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group.
